Garray Gunda: The Opal Origin Story, Video and Children's Book
What if a rainbow could be kept safe inside a stone?
Turn an opal towards the light and that question feels easy to imagine. Colour appears, shifts and flashes again. In the Garray story shared by Australian Opal Cutters, those colours hold a promise: a gift of love, hidden beneath the earth for future generations to discover.
Here we bring together our retelling, the GARRAY GUNDA video and the Garray Gunda children's book PDF, so you can explore the story and share it with your family.
The rainbow that became a gemstone
In Australian Opal Cutters' telling, the story begins when water covers the earth. Garray, the great creator spirit, creates a rainbow as a promise of his love.
The Mokuy, described in the story as evil spirits, become jealous. They bring a terrible drought. Without rain, the rainbow can no longer be seen.
Garray keeps his gift safe. He places the rainbow inside a stone and hides it in the ground, where future generations will be able to search for it and find it.
The Mokuy look everywhere, but they cannot discover the hidden stone. Beneath the dry earth, its colours remain protected.
Our video and children's book describe the rainbow gem as Dhuyu Birrimbirr, representing the spirit of mankind, and call it Garray Gunda: the Creator's Gemstone.
A story about love, hope and discovery
The image at the heart of the story is simple enough for a child to picture: a rainbow, carefully placed inside a stone. Its meaning invites a longer conversation.
Something beautiful has been protected through a difficult time. A gift has been left for people who have yet to find it. The colours are waiting beneath the surface, ready to be seen again.
For an opal lover, that image has a particular appeal. A small movement can reveal colour you did not notice a moment before. The story offers a way to pause over that experience and enjoy the sense of discovery.

Read the Garray Gunda children's book
For a quieter way to share the story, open the illustrated children's book and take it a page at a time.
Read the Garray Gunda kids' book PDF (approximately 38.4 MB). This updated edition includes a QR code to watch the movie. The link opens the book in Google Drive, where you can view it or download a copy.
After reading, try asking:
- Why did Garray want to keep the rainbow safe?
- What do you think it would feel like to discover the hidden stone?
- Which colours would you put into a rainbow gemstone?
Children can draw their own rainbow stone while you talk about the story's themes of care, generosity and hope.
About this retelling
This article follows Australian Opal Cutters' Garray materials and children's book. Our source materials attribute the account to Yolŋu elders in Arnhem Land. We present it here as Australian Opal Cutters' retelling of that account, recognising that Aboriginal peoples have distinct cultures, languages and storytelling traditions. This version should not be taken as representing every community's beliefs.
The story is a symbolic account of opal's origins. Readers interested in the gemstone itself can also explore our Australian opal collection and enjoy the colours that make each discovery so memorable.
