This ring features a Natural Opal Type 1 - Australian Light Opal, which is defined by the Opal industry as an opal presented in one piece in its natural state, without cutting or polishing, and with a substantially homogenous chemical composition. Genuine Natural Australian Light Opal is not commonly found in all of the Australian Opal fields, but predominantly from Coober Pedy in South Australia. This opal is a hydrated amorphous form of silica SiO2nH2O, consisting of spheres of silicon dioxide molecules arranged in regular, closely packed planes. It has a white base tone with elements of Magnezium Oxide present within the pure hydrated silica SiO2nH2O. This precious opal displays a mesmerizing interplay of internal colours, and despite being a mineraloid, it has an internal structure. At microscopic scales, precious Opal is composed of silica spheres that range from 150 to 300 nm in diameter in a hexagonal or cubic close-packed lattice.
